...As evidenced by our activities the last two weekends. On March 14, Ely attended his very first prairie burn with Greg and I and his second cousin Noelle at the Pecatonica Forest Preserve. (Don't worry, mom and dad didn't keep him out in the smoke too long!) Prairie burns are always a time of renewal, when only weeks from now, tiny green shoots of little bluestem, indian grass, coneflowers, and the like will be emerging from the charred soil.
Then this past Saturday, the three of us went on a 3-hour hike through Severson and Colman Dells in search of the first signs of spring - skunk cabbage, hepatica, and herpites - and we found all three! Although, we did not take any pictures of the hepatica because it's delicate lavender flower is not yet open. As for herpites, we saw the first gardner snake of the season, two painted turtles, green frogs, and heard lots of chorus frogs. Ely had a great time, napping through most of the hike, and wide-eyed through the rest of it. He seems to enjoy the outdoors very much, and a quick trip outside usually solves any bouts of fussiness. A good sign to his nature-loving parents!
